Working with acrylic on canvas Thomas Hylander has been described as using ‘painting as arcaheology’. He applies and scrapes paint in equal measure to create ghostly dreamscapes evoking the forests and swamps of his childhood or even still lives. As Hylander excavates the canvas, the objects that offer a glimmer of tangibility just as quickly blur away so that his images stand on the threshold between objective discernibility and emotive mark. Through Hylander’s use of dry colour the paintings are imbued with a sense of transience, as if the works are whispers of memories that perpetually slip one’s grasp.
