Griffiths presents
new sculptural works. He has wandered outside the confines of
the control room, away from cardboard supercomputers, and introduces
us to inhabitants of an unknowable time and place. Slipping
between homecoming parade and the classic hotch-potch of vagabonds
cobbled together for just one last mission, this procession
of loners seem to be following a common cause. Materials and
what they represent wrestle for dominance. In this world, ingenuity
is paramount yet transformation is always fragile. Zooming from
the general to the detail, like expressive sketches, the figures
obtain a vitality or a voodoo potency. There is an absurd logic
at work in these proud, pathetic figures. As monuments to an
historic event, they are ridiculous and sincere with unfathomable
optimism; they come out of a time when few were charmed.
