Russian wonder duo
Vladimir Dubossarsky & Alexsander Vinogradov paint social
realism for The People: heroicism that the public truly demands.
Their paintings range from post-Cold War romance dioramas starring
world political leaders and action film heroes, demented renderings
of Western icons i.e. Mickey Mouse & Barbie, and fashion
glamorous depictions of New Russian (Mafioso) lifestyle. Their
previous show at Vilma Gold hosted a 6m Painting For London,
a Baroque flattery of Queen Elizabeth as a Diana-like fairy
princess picnicking with a gangly mob of her proletariat, a
bestiary of wild animals, and a choir of chubby putti. This
current exhibition offers an array of more traditionally romantic
scenes: the carnal brutality of an idealised wilderness, landscapes
and underwater scenes populated by heroin-chic sex models, Jurassic
lizards, and mythological adventure. They will be exhibiting
at Deitch Projects in New York in March.
